Description:
Stokowski conducts Khachaturian and Tchaikovsky
Khachaturian - Masquerade Suite - Incidental Music For Lermontov's Play "Masquerade" (1939) - Tchaikovsky - Francesca da Rimini, Symphonic Fantasia, Op. 32 (1876) - New York Philharmonic, Leopold Stokowski
This is Stokowski at his best. The Masquerade Suite is a real gem which can get under your skin if you listen to it enough. Stokowski's reading of Francesca da Rimini presented here possibly outranks all other recorded versions of this work I've yet encountered.
Both recordings have very good sound; and the recording of Francesca da Rimini has especially good sound for the period. (Stokowski always maintained a keen interest in utilizing the latest recording technology, making the first experimental stereo recordings in the 1930s - including having his 1932 recording of Schoenberg's "Gurre Lieder" issued as an LP set during this time.)
LP transfer / restoration of material issued c.1951 (Columbia)
Original over and notes included.
