In this fascinating book on economic espionage, Fink (Crisis Management:
Planning for the Inevitable) makes the case that the global threat of economic
espionage is enormous and that all companies, regardless of size, need to take
steps to counter this threat. The first half of the book presents the global
view and lists the various countries suspected of spying on the United States.
The second half offers advice on how a company can protect its trade secrets and
whether it should go public with a trade secret loss, involve the FBI, or keep
quiet about the breach. Throughout, the author profiles the first case that the
FBI prosecuted under the Economic Espionage Act of 1996. This case involved an
employee of an adhesives company, Avery Dennison Corp., who was eventually
convaicted of passing trade secrets to a Taiwanese company, Four Pillars
Enterprises. The Avery/Four Pillars case is also covered in Adam L. Penenberg
and Marc Barry's Spooked: Espionage in Corporate America (Perseus, 2000).
