Each level contains 30 lessons and 30 supplementary "readings" which add cultural context and clarify any difficult or tricky material. There are extra texts/images, such as the owner's manual, which are included but not required to use the programs. These are the current editions available; just load up Lesson 1 in a FLAC-compatible player and begin - no complicated instructions!
For anyone not familiar with the Pimsleur audio courses, they are the flat-out best audio learning programs available for learning Japanese. They don't require any reading material, note-taking, or rote memorization. Each lesson is about 30 minutes long and re-introduces material from previous lessons at appropriate intervals to make sure you don't forget what you've learned!
