Afternoon Play: Two-Pipe Problems 11-08-2008 - 12-08-2008<br /> <br /> From The Radio Times<br /> <br /> Those veterans of TV light entertainment, Stanley Baxter and Richard Briers, return as retired actors-cum-amateur detectives Sandy and William in the first of this week's two comedy mysteries. As inmates of a rest home for elderly thespians, the two bicker mercilessly but as soon as a mystery is afoot, the pair call upon their experience playing Baker Street sleuths Sherlock Homes and Dr Watson to expose the culprit. In the first play, it's the sender of a poison pen letter, while tomorrow's tale sees the geriatric twosome on the trail of some missing film master tapes. Baxter and Briers are terrific together, with the former acting as a kind of laconic foil to Briers's fulminating curmudgeon, as he pings out barbed comments with relish.<br /> <br /> Jeremy Aspinall<br /> <br /> 1/2.
