A child is abducted from a rural southern Italian community and a comparatively small ransom demanded of his parents. The carabinieri, a combination of local and city officers, specially brought in for the case, stake out the drop-off point and apprehend Guiseppe, a local simpleton, as he attempts to take the money. The case proves more complicated than it first seemed: Guiseppe confesses to hiding the child's body and attempting to extort money from his parents, but says the boy "was already dead" when he found him. Then a second body is discovered. Guiseppe was in custody and could not have committed the crime.
