| Description: |
Dr. Feelgood is a band of British pub rock. It is mainly centered around the singer and harmonica player Lee Brilleaux (Lee Collinson, 1952-1994) and guitarist Wilko Johnson (born 1947). Their style is a kind of rhythm and blues, powerful and minimalist, made many original compositions and covers of blues and rock \'n\' roll. The band\'s name comes from the Anglo-Saxon slang referring to heroin or doctor willing to prescribe a plethora of drugs. In 1962, the same name is used by the pianist and singer Willie Perryman American blues, also known by the nickname Red Piano, when it saves the song Dr. Feelgood and renames his band Dr. Feelgood & the Interns. The song is taken by many British bands, including The Pirates that make the B side of one of their singles. It is assumed that this is when the group decides to come to appropriate the name. Admirer of Johnny Kidd and his guitarist Mick Green, Wilko Johnson founded his first band in 1964 with drummer Johnny Martin, The Big Figure said. They base Brilleaux Dr. Feelgood with Lee and bassist John B. Sparks in 1971 in Canvey Island near London. It is by playing their music in the pubs of the region they are revealed. Supported by the music press, they sign with United Artists Records with whom they released their first 45 in late 1974: Roxette, a Johnson composition. This is followed by an album deliberately retro titled Down by the Jetty, mono recorded in one take and packaged in a pouch in black and white. The second album, Malpractice, produced by the group, meeting the public success with the hit Back In The Night. In 1976, the live Stupidity, which better reflects the energy that the group is capable of deploying on stage than studio albums, reached number one on the British charts. During recording of Sneakin \'Suspicion, dissension arise between Brilleaux and Johnson, and he decides to leave Dr. Feelgood. He was replaced by John Mayo who participates in the following two albums: Be Seeing You produced by Nick Lowe and Private Practice produced by Richard Gottehrer, which carry their biggest hit: Milk and Alcohol, written by Lowe and Mayo.
