I love That Mitchell and Webb Look because it's a glorious collision of the literate and the stupid; a perfectly constructed micro-world where apparently quite clever people do very daft things. Like the disenchanted battle re-enactment group that has a very ill-advised go at the Mau Mau Uprising. There are real echoes of A Bit of Fry & Laurie in David Mitchell and Robert Webb's comedy, particularly in its inventive silliness: the Carry On-type bawdy 1970s hospital where everyone, apart from one baffled doctor, talks in innuendos; the increasingly hysterical satellite sports channel presenter; and the unforgettable The Numberwang Code, the perfect pastiche of that fi lm-of-the book. After the awful Extras Christmas special and the recent torrent of introspective sitcoms, I was beginning to fear that comedy had disappeared up a Eugene O'Neillshaped fundament. Luckily, Mitchell and Webb are here to make us laugh. Which I think is what TV comedy is supposed to do.
